Rowena Dring

Rowena Dring | Textile artist

English artist Rowena Dring lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied painting at Chelsea College of Art and Design (London), then at Goldsmiths College (London), graduating in 1998.

Rowena Dring mixes textiles and painting, fine arts and decorative arts. She begins by photographing landscapes, which she then redraws on the computer. She deconstructs masses, flows of light and shadow, isolates the extent of a detail in the manner of an abstract landscape. Recomposes. The shapes are then digitally cut and machine-sewn onto the canvas. From a distance, his pieces look like a painter's canvas. As you get closer, you realize that the mechanized needle and cotton threads have served as brushes and pigments. For her, this is the most pertinent and liberating way of redefining painting and working on the question of landscape representation.
